About Obsidian
Obsidian is one of the most powerful and ancient stones on Earth — a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when molten lava cools so rapidly that crystals do not have time to form, creating a smooth, jet-black surface of extraordinary depth and intensity. Found in volcanic regions around the world, including Mexico, Iceland, the United States, and Japan, obsidian has been used by humanity for over 700,000 years, making it one of the oldest known tools and sacred objects in human history.
Throughout history, obsidian has been revered across cultures as a stone of extraordinary power and truth. Ancient Mesoamerican civilizations — the Aztecs and Maya — regarded obsidian as sacred, using it to craft weapons, ceremonial mirrors, and ritual objects for communication with the spirit world. The Aztec god Tezcatlipoca, whose name means “Smoking Mirror,” was associated with obsidian mirrors used for scrying and prophecy. Ancient Greeks and Romans used obsidian in jewelry and amulets. Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest traded obsidian across vast distances, recognizing it as a stone of profound spiritual and practical significance. In shamanic traditions around the world, obsidian has long been used as a mirror of the soul — a stone that reveals what is hidden and protects against all that does not serve.
Today, obsidian remains one of the most revered protective and transformative stones for those drawn to mindful, intentional living — valued for its fierce, glossy beauty, its deeply cleansing energy, and the quiet sense of truth, protection, and inner power it seems to awaken in all who carry it.
Symbolic Meaning
Obsidian has long been admired as a symbol of protection, truth, inner power, and shadow healing.
Across many traditions, obsidian is often associated with shielding against negativity, cutting through illusion, and revealing the deeper truths that lie beneath the surface of our lives. Many people choose obsidian as a meaningful reminder to face themselves with honesty and courage — to release what no longer serves, embrace their own inner power, and move through the world protected, clear, and whole.
These symbolic associations are rooted in tradition and personal belief. Individual experiences are unique.
